With major accolades and just as many (if not more) tips, the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards are finally out.

Artists who support the Oscars to embrace fan favorite movies got their wish Tuesday as Joseph Kosinski’s “Top Gun: Maverick” and James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water,” both sequels, entered a tight race for best picture. . Their competitors include Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, Todd Field’s TÁR, Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness, Sarah Polley’s Women Talking, Edwardll Berger. Silent Western Front” and Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which leads the major race with 11 Oscar nominations.

The movies that didn’t get nominated are just as interesting as the ones that did. While Polley’s Amish drama won the top prize, women were once again left out of the Best Director category. Worse, Gina Prince-Bythewood saw her box office success and critical acclaim completely frozen.

“It’s shocking to see audience favorite ‘The Woman King’ come up empty-handed, and even Oscar winner Viola Davis missed out on Best Actress,” writes IndieWire’s Marcus Jones of Prince-Bythewood’s widely acclaimed epic historical drama. “Many factors may have contributed to its failure, from a bias against Best Picture action films to a last-minute grassroots campaign by Andrea Riseborough that may have unseated perennial contender Viola Davis.” Other black films that were not considered for Oscars include Jordan Peele’s No and Chinonye Chukwu’s Dill.

Both Park Chan-wook’s “The Decision to Leave” (Korea’s entry) and Davy Chou’s “Return to Seoul” (Cambodia’s entry) were not recognized in the race for Best International Feature Film. That puts “All Quiet on the Western Front” (Germany’s entry) in with a chance of winning two major awards if it wins best picture.

Of course, this is only a small part of what will still shake out from Tuesday’s nominations. Here are 26 great movies that have been completely snubbed at the 2023 Oscars — picked from a combination of IndieWire’s favorites and early predictions before the Academy’s announcement.
