Scouting Report Reveals What Contributed To 49ers’ NFL Draft Drop In QB Brock Purdy
Rookie Brody Purdy has taken the NFL by storm since becoming the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers in December.
The former Iowa State standout earned the title of “Mr. Irrelevant” after being selected by the 49ers with the final pick of the 2022 draft. However, the scouting report sheds some light on one team’s level of interest in drafting the quarterback.
The Athletic obtained a scouting report that touched on Purdy’s positive attributes as well as some of his potential downsides.
According to the report, the scout said Purdy was “very mature and experienced.” He was a four-year starter during his time in college football.

But the coach also drew attention to his physical limitations. “I did not test well, a limited athlete who has a chiseled body,” the report said, with weaknesses acknowledged as “limited arms, both in power and throwing repertoire.”
“I don’t remember him moving like that at Iowa State and not testing well. He jumped 27 inches, which is terrible. He ran 4.85 (4.84). He’s got short arms, like really short, and he’s got small hands. He’s 6 :1 and the arm is fine. The twitches just weren’t there. His short shuttle was fine — 4.45 — that’s nothing out of the ordinary,” the coach said.

49ERS’ BROCK PURDY EARNS PRAISE FOR KEEPING FAITH IN IMAGE AHEAD OF NFC TITLE
The 49ers previously drafted cornerback Trey Lance with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft. San Francisco appeared poised to hand Lance the franchise keys for the 2022 season, and Purdy wasn’t expected to contribute this year.
A few months after drafting Purdy, the Niners decided to restructure the contract of veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, which saw him agree to a one-year restricted deal to serve as Lance’s backup. But Lance suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2 and Garoppolo later suffered a leg injury, suddenly thrusting Purdy into the starting role.
Purdy has yet to lose a game since being named the starter. His next test comes Sunday in the NFC Championship against the top-seeded Philadelphia Eagles. Purdy will be the fifth freshman quarterback to play in the conference championship.

The coach who evaluated Purdy said the 23-year-old’s ability to process defensive schemes contributed to his success.
“He’s processing a lot of information because they do a lot of movement in this offense, shifting, killing, alerting. It can be hard to just jump on the ball and know which way to pass the ball. His composure on the way down — he didn’t make too many fouls — that was really impressive ,” said the coach, who believes Purdy would be considered a second- or third-rounder today.
